In an effort to solve a 40-year-old murder case that led to an innocent man serving 38 years in prison, detectives have conducted DNA testing on over 600 men.
Peter Sullivan, then 30 years old, was wrongly accused of killing 21-year-old florist Diane Sindall in a brutal attack back in 1986, earning him nicknames like the “Beast of Birkenhead” and “Wolfman.” His conviction was overturned last year after he claimed to have made a false confession due to mistreatment by Merseyside officers.
The investigation into the Wirral murder was reopened in 2023 following DNA evidence linking a male individual to samples collected at the crime scene. Collaborating with the National Crime Agency, authorities are actively working to identify the person associated with the DNA profile.
A reward of up to £20,000 offered by Crimestoppers for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Diane’s killer remains in effect.
Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson, heading the investigation, emphasized the commitment to bringing justice to Diane’s family and the public. She highlighted the exhaustive efforts, including reexamining witness testimonies, conducting DNA analyses, and pursuing new leads provided by the community.
Wilson urged individuals with information on Diane’s murder to come forward, stressing that the DNA profile could be instrumental in identifying the perpetrator, with 575 individuals already eliminated from suspicion and 32 still under scrutiny.
Reflecting on the lack of advanced DNA technology during the initial investigation, Wilson expressed optimism about leveraging modern forensic capabilities to solve the case and called for potential witnesses to courageously provide any pertinent information.
Diane, a young woman working part-time at a local pub to support her upcoming wedding plans, was tragically killed after running out of petrol and walking along a well-lit road, where she was last seen alive by witnesses.
Her lifeless body was discovered in an alleyway hours later, revealing signs of a violent assault. The investigation led to Sullivan’s arrest, who was accused based on various accounts of his activities near the crime scene.
Sullivan, initially denied proper legal representation during interrogation, was convicted in 1987 with dental evidence linking him to the crime scene. His release was secured years later through advanced DNA technology.
Expressing remorse for the victim’s family, Sullivan offered his support and vowed to stand by them in their pursuit of justice. He urged anyone withholding information about the case to come forward and assist in the investigation.
