“Nine-Year-Old Heroine Contain Stockport Cricket Club Wildfire”

Date:

A wildfire at Stockport Cricket Club was swiftly contained by a nine-year-old girl who raised the alarm to her mother, Rebecca Evans, the bar manager. The incident occurred on July 18, causing spectators to be evacuated temporarily as the fire spread through nearby bushes and trees bordering Cale Green Park.

According to club officials, this event is part of a series of targeted incidents involving fires and vandalism at the cricket club. Rebecca Evans, upon noticing the fire, immediately called emergency services while monitoring the escalating situation. She ensured the safety of children present by moving them to a secure location within the clubhouse until the fire brigade arrived.

The cricket pitch’s edge, which faces Cale Green Park, often attracts people who remain hidden among the bushes, making it challenging to monitor activities in the area. The recent incident occurred amid a wave of wildfires across the country due to the exceptionally high temperatures this summer.

Stockport Cricket Club has faced multiple instances of damage, including vandalism, fires, and racist graffiti in recent years. The Greater Manchester Police have received reports of antisocial behavior involving fireworks, cannabis, and intentional fires at the club, highlighting a concerning trend of escalating incidents.

Herman Schurink, the club treasurer, expressed frustration over the increasing vandalism, noting the financial strain it imposes on the club. He emphasized the importance of volunteers and suggested enhancing security measures, such as installing more secure fencing, to deter future incidents.

The club’s official social media account posted about the ongoing challenges with antisocial behavior and vandalism from individuals frequenting Cale Green Park. The post detailed instances of property damage, including lit cans being thrown at players and destruction of club facilities, leading to substantial repair costs.

Efforts to address the recurrent issues include proposals to clear bushes and open up the area to prevent unauthorized access and potential fire risks. Stockport Council has been approached for comment regarding the situation at the cricket club.
