A recent survey indicates that approximately 10% of households are reluctant to comply with the hosepipe bans imposed in their regions following the announcement of drought conditions in various parts of the UK. The nation has experienced four heatwaves this year, with temperatures exceeding 35C in some areas. Limited rainfall in July led to millions of households facing hosepipe restrictions. Despite this, around 11% of households within ban areas are considering not adhering to the ban.
According to a YouGov poll involving over 4,200 adults, about 5% of respondents are uncertain about their compliance with the ban. The survey also revealed differing opinions on reporting neighbors using a hosepipe during a ban, with 10% willing to report violations.
Seven water companies, including Affinity Water, Anglian Water, and Thames Water, have implemented “Temporary Use Bans,” affecting approximately 23 million customers, or 40% of England’s population. Public sentiment on hosepipe bans is divided, with 49% in support and 35% opposing the restrictions. Some individuals argue that metered customers should have unrestricted water usage due to their payments.
Reasons cited for non-compliance include difficulties in watering crops with a watering can, concerns about wasted produce, and aiding garden wildlife. Criticisms towards water companies’ pricing practices were also expressed, with one individual highlighting excessive bills and corporate priorities over infrastructure investments.
Households under bans can use watering cans and hoses for food crops when necessary, with drip irrigation systems permitted if equipped with timers and pressure-reducing valves. The bans coincide with a significant portion of England facing prolonged dry conditions, prompting conservation efforts and urging water-wise practices.
Water UK and the Environment Agency emphasize the importance of water conservation during the drought. Companies are actively managing supplies to address increased demand and fix leaks. The bans aim to conserve water resources amidst uncertain forecasts.
