As England faces heat health alerts with temperatures expected to soar into the mid-30s centigrade following the driest July on record for England and Wales, farmers are grappling with parched conditions. This has led to advanced wheat harvesting, impacting yields significantly, and livestock farmers dipping into winter feed due to the lack of grass growth.
The dwindling reservoir levels are particularly affecting potato production, with around half of the crop requiring irrigation. Bradshaw stressed the urgency of enhancing the food system’s resilience and urged the government to provide tax incentives for farmers to build water storage systems.
Anthony Hopkins of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board noted that harvesters have been operating earlier than usual, with some farmers working through the night to avoid extreme daytime temperatures. Amid rising costs, some farmers are considering selling their farms.
There are concerns that food prices may escalate in stores, further straining household budgets. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has prioritized addressing living costs in his administration. Experts like Dr. Anna Murgatroyd foresee potential food price hikes and dwindling British food products on shelves, possibly leading to shortages in the coming months.
