The attack occurred in Sumy, located in northeastern Ukraine, while Kyiv launched multiple drone strikes into Russia, specifically targeting the e-commerce company Wildberries.
In Sumy, Russia launched eight guided aerial bombs, intensifying the ongoing attacks on the region as Ukraine faces challenges in defending against air assaults. The head of the Sumy regional military administration, Oleh Hryhorov, reported that in the northern Sumy region, six Russian glide bombs killed three individuals, including the two young girls and an elderly woman. Additionally, Russian forces targeted Kharkiv and 18 other towns and villages in the northern region, resulting in one fatality and seven injuries, including an eight-year-old child.
In response, Ukraine deployed 300 drones to strike various cities and industrial sites across Russia. Notably, Ukrainian drones targeted two major Wildberries logistics hubs near Moscow and St. Petersburg in the recent attacks.
The escalating conflict has seen a total of 20 strikes on Wildberries facilities, disrupting Russia’s supply network. Local authorities reported that a strike in the Moscow region’s town of Chekhov caused a warehouse in an industrial zone to catch fire, resulting in five fatalities and six injuries. These attacks are believed to be strategic responses to Wildberries’ alleged support for the Russian military, prompting the company to consider relocating to Kazakhstan to evade further Ukrainian drone strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concerns over the overwhelmed state of Ukraine’s air defenses, emphasizing the urgent need for anti-ballistic missile systems to protect civilians. He urged international partners to provide Patriot missiles to intercept ballistic missiles threatening Ukraine. While there are discussions about potentially allowing Ukraine to produce Patriot missiles locally, formal agreements are not expected to be finalized until winter, as per US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker.
Whitaker highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance defense capabilities in collaboration with Ukraine and European allies to bolster Ukraine’s defense and regional security. The situation remains tense as both sides continue military actions with significant implications for the ongoing conflict.
