“Food Storage Dilemma: Fridge vs Cupboard Sparks Debates”

Date:

The debate over where to store certain foods like eggs, ketchup, and bread—inside the fridge or in the cupboard—often leads to disagreements among partners and family members. A recent survey revealed that approximately two-thirds of individuals have argued about this issue at least twice a month in the past year.

Many people feel uncertain about the optimal storage location for various foods to maintain their taste and freshness. While some rely on traditional practices learned from their parents, a significant number now seek advice online for guidance.

A survey by Bahlsen, a biscuit manufacturer, highlighted that bananas, potatoes, avocados, bread, jam, and honey are among the items that puzzle Brits when it comes to storage. Food waste expert Kate Hall emphasized the importance of proper storage conditions, especially during warm weather, as factors like temperature, humidity, and light exposure impact the quality of foods.

Kate recommended refrigerating apples to slow down the aging process and maintain their crispness. Storing potatoes in the fridge can extend their shelf life significantly. For opened jams and marmalade, refrigeration is advised to prevent mold growth. Similarly, condiments should be refrigerated post-opening to preserve their taste and quality.

Regarding eggs, Kate suggested that in the UK, they can be stored at room temperature unless the room exceeds 20°C. It is beneficial to keep eggs in their original packaging to prevent absorbing odors from other foods in the fridge. Additionally, she recommended refrigerating fresh herbs, berries, and cucumbers.

However, refrigerating tomatoes is discouraged as it can affect their taste and texture negatively. Olive oil should be stored in a cool, dark cupboard, while honey should be kept out of the fridge to prevent crystallization. Coffee, onions, garlic, and avocados (until ripe) are also best stored outside the fridge.

Bananas are advised to be left at room temperature to ripen naturally. Refrigerating chocolate biscuits may cause a whitish bloom on the surface, so it’s recommended to store them at room temperature.

By following these storage guidelines, you can ensure that your foods remain fresh and flavorsome for longer periods.
