A recent study conducted by Uswitch.com has unveiled that over five million individuals in the UK have suffered adverse consequences due to inaccurate advice provided by an AI chatbot, leading to financial losses. Additionally, the research highlights instances where people have encountered health concerns and strained relationships as a result of relying on online platforms for guidance.
The study indicates that more than 43% of UK adults have sought personal advice from chatbots, with nearly half trusting their recommendations as much as, or even more than, advice from friends or family. However, 23% of AI users reported facing real issues due to incorrect advice received from chatbots.
Furthermore, a significant proportion of the population, around 18% of UK adults, have acted upon advice from chatbots without seeking a second opinion, with this figure rising to 40% among Generation Z individuals. It is crucial to note that if a chatbot provides unsound financial suggestions, individuals cannot seek recourse through the Financial Ombudsman Service.
In response to these findings, chatbots are set to be incorporated into the Online Safety Act, which holds social media platforms and search engines accountable for user safety. Additionally, new regulations in the EU mandate that chatbots must remind users of their artificial nature.
Uswitch advises utilizing AI as a starting point for information and recommends verifying financial guidance through reputable sources such as MoneyHelper, regulated financial advisors, solicitors, or Citizens Advice. It is essential to cross-check information sources and avoid relying on outdated data.
Ernest Doku, a technology expert at Uswitch, emphasized the evolving online behaviors of Britons, underlining the rapid adoption of chatbots for personal queries. While AI can serve as a valuable resource, Doku cautions users to view chatbot responses as initial guidance rather than definitive answers, particularly in significant matters like health, finances, or life decisions. Seeking a human second opinion before acting on chatbot advice is advised for crucial decisions.
