Tourists visiting a popular Mediterranean vacation destination have received a cautionary message from an armed group wearing masks.
Corsica, renowned for its beautiful beaches, historic towns, and delicious food, has been the subject of a warning to British tourists considering moving to the island by a separatist faction known as the Corsican National Liberation Front-Union of Combatants (FLNC-UC).
In a video released by the group, armed militants with machine guns conveyed a message that individuals purchasing second homes in Corsica should not feel secure, labeling the influx of people to the region as “colonization driven by rampant settlement.”
The FLNC-UC rejected an autonomy proposal, prompting French anti-terror prosecutors to initiate a preliminary inquiry. The investigation will focus on potential conspiracy to commit terrorist acts and possession of weapons for such purposes.
Despite the controversial nature of the autonomy bill, which seeks to acknowledge Corsica as a distinct cultural entity while maintaining its ties to France, the FLNC-UC has strongly criticized it as a denial of the Corsican identity and key demands of recent years.
The separatist group raised concerns over the increasing number of individuals from mainland France relocating to Corsica annually, particularly for property investment, accusing them of being “invaders.”
Established in 1976, the FLNC has a history of attacks on the island. Recent incidents in 2023 involved multiple bombings targeting vacation residences and public buildings, with no reported casualties.
