More than a thousand residents on the western coast of Newfoundland are facing an extended power outage due to a bird strike incident at the Rocky Harbour Station. The outage, which began on Monday morning, has affected around 1,225 customers in the Rocky Harbour and Norris Point areas. Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro initially aimed to restore power by Tuesday noon, but after unsuccessful overnight transformer repair work, the new estimated restoration time was pushed to midnight.
Efforts to resolve the issue are ongoing, with crews troubleshooting the problem and arrangements being made to bring in a backup transformer by 6 p.m. local time. Stephanie Burden, the owner of Complete Care Pharmasave in Rocky Harbour, has been assisting the community by providing a place for residents to charge their devices using a backup generator at her store. She mentioned that many of those seeking assistance were tourists, some even needing to submit urgent work online.
Despite the inconvenience, Burden noted that the atmosphere at her store remained positive, with people trying to make the best of the situation. She emphasized the importance of being prepared for such outages, comparing it to readiness for winter storms. The lack of power has hindered internet access and communication for many residents, underlining the necessity of preparedness for unforeseen circumstances.
In response to the outage, Norris Point opened its town hall to offer charging stations and other amenities to those affected. Mayor Sheralyn Rumbolt expressed gratitude for the community’s resilience and support for each other during this challenging time. Concerns were raised about the impact on local businesses, particularly during the peak tourism season, as well as the reliability of cellular service in rural areas.
Rumbolt stressed the significance of addressing cell service issues as a public safety concern and mentioned efforts to engage with the provincial government on this matter. She highlighted the need for improved communication infrastructure in the region, especially during emergencies.
