Jakob Ingebrigtsen made a triumphant return from injury by securing his fourth consecutive 5,000-meter title at the European championships in Birmingham, England. The Norwegian, a two-time Olympic champion, had been sidelined for some time following surgery earlier this year to address issues with scar tissue around his left Achilles tendon.
During the race, Ingebrigtsen demonstrated his signature finishing speed, coming from third place to overtake Florian Bremm of Germany in the final 50 meters, finishing in 13 minutes and 15.29 seconds. Bremm settled for second place, with France’s Etienne Daguinos in third.
Reflecting on his victory, Ingebrigtsen expressed his disbelief at reclaiming the European championship title after facing significant challenges. He credited his return to form to a newfound sense of self-assurance and determination, emphasizing the hard work put in during the preceding weeks.
Ingebrigtsen’s competitors lauded his exceptional talent, with Daguinos hailing him as a “legend of our sport.” Bremm acknowledged Ingebrigtsen’s superior speed, conceding that the Norwegian had proven himself despite his recent injury setback.
Although Ingebrigtsen opted out of the 1,500-meter event at the championships, his remarkable success in the 5,000 meters added to his legacy as one of the most accomplished male athletes in European championship history. His victory marked his seventh individual gold at the continental level.
In a separate event, Amy Hunt of Britain clinched the women’s 100 meters title, crossing the finish line in 11 seconds and narrowly defeating Poland’s Ewa Swoboda and Belgium’s Delphine Nkansa. Meanwhile, Dutch athlete Jessica Schilder secured her third consecutive shot put gold, showcasing her resilience and unwavering determination despite competing with a finger injury.
Schilder’s dominant performance in the shot put event further solidified her status as a standout athlete in the field, with her previous achievements at the European championships in Rome and Munich underscoring her exceptional talent and consistency. Leonardo Fabbri successfully defended his men’s shot put title, with Italy’s Zane Weir and Sweden’s Wictor Petersson securing second and third place, respectively.
