“Rural Family Faces Emergency Service Crisis: Costly Journey for Medical Care”

Date:

A family residing in Biggar faced significant challenges due to the lack of nearby emergency services, leading to substantial expenses. Amy Haynes recounted the ordeal when her three-year-old son, Nolan, developed a high fever exceeding 40°C this spring. Concerned about the severity of the fever potentially causing a seizure, they sought emergency care, only to discover that all hospitals in Saskatoon, North Battleford, and Swift Current had no available beds.

Despite the urgency, the family had to endure a costly two-and-a-half-hour ambulance journey to Prince Albert, amounting to $1,300. Haynes expressed frustration at the difficulty in accessing prompt medical assistance, emphasizing the lack of available hospital beds in the vicinity.

Following the hospitalization in Prince Albert, where Nolan received treatment for suspected pneumonia, the family was relieved to return home after a few days. The unexpected hefty ambulance bill further compounded their distress, underscoring the repercussions of inadequate healthcare resources in rural areas.

The story of the Haynes family was highlighted by the provincial Opposition NDP during a news conference in Biggar, shedding light on the broader implications of limited hospital capacity on patient outcomes. NDP MLA Keith Jorgenson emphasized the critical importance of timely access to medical facilities, emphasizing the potential life-saving impact of proximity in emergency situations.

In response to mounting concerns, the provincial government assured efforts to address hospital capacity issues by adding 146 additional beds in Saskatoon. However, it clarified that ambulance services are not covered under the Canada Health Act, leaving patients responsible for inter-hospital transportation expenses. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by rural communities in accessing essential healthcare services.
