The discussion centered around “Tony,” a highly anticipated biopic focusing on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s posthumous acclaim following his tragic death in 2018, Johnson expressed comfort in narrating his story.
Johnson admitted to no prior attachment to Bourdain’s persona or reputation and never intended to create a film about him. However, after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who portrays Bourdain in the movie, Johnson felt compelled to explore shared perspectives on various life issues, leading to the decision to delve into Bourdain’s narrative.
The script for “Tony” draws inspiration from Bourdain’s youth as depicted in his book “Kitchen Confidential,” condensing the storyline into a summer in Provincetown, Mass. Johnson and Sessa, both initially unfamiliar with Bourdain’s work, aimed to maintain authenticity in portraying the young, aspiring chef’s journey without the burden of recreating the older, established Bourdain revered by many.
By focusing on Bourdain’s formative years, the film touches on complex themes such as childhood struggles, relationships, and self-perception, resonating with audiences who idolize the late chef. Johnson emphasized the collaborative essence between himself, Sessa, and Bourdain in crafting a relatable and meaningful narrative in “Tony.”
“Tony” is set to premiere in theaters across Canada on Friday, Aug. 14, offering a fresh perspective on Anthony Bourdain’s early life and culinary beginnings.
