“Rare Arctic Plant Discovery Raises Invasive Species Concerns”

Klaus Koehler, an enthusiast of plants, was walking in Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit in July when he stumbled upon a plant species rarely spotted in the Arctic. He believes this finding could have implications for the spread of invasive species in the Northern regions as the climate undergoes warming.

While exploring, Koehler reached into a pond and extracted a brownish weed-like plant known as bladderwort. He described it as unremarkable to the naked eye but recognizable once you know what to look for.

This carnivorous plant is adorned with small black bladders containing nearly digested flies, a trait not commonly observed in the Arctic due to its usual habitat further south. The last documented instance of bladderwort growth in the area was back in 2012 when scientists discovered samples outside Kimmirut, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit.

During three expeditions to the Arctic, the team uncovered more than 30 new plant species in the Arctic archipelago. Koehler suggests that the emergence of such plants in the Arctic could indicate a shifting climate pattern.

Although the Arctic currently has few invasive species due to the harsh weather conditions, the warming climate is fostering a more conducive environment for plants that traditionally do not thrive in the region. This change is expected to impact the ecosystem significantly, with vegetation expanding due to longer summers and milder winters.

Paul Sokoloff, a senior research assistant at Ottawa’s Museum of Nature, shares Koehler’s concerns. He participated in the 2012 study that identified bladderwort in the region. Sokoloff highlights potential risks posed by incoming plant species carried by birds, ships, and human visitors to the Arctic.

He emphasizes the need to prevent invasive species from outcompeting native plants, citing the example of Phragmites, a damaging invasive grass from Eurasia that has disrupted Ontario’s ecosystem for years. While Koehler’s discovery may not pose an immediate threat, Sokoloff warns that other invading species could have detrimental effects.

A study by scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2025 revealed over 2,500 plant species with the capacity to invade Arctic territories, potentially displacing native flora. Sokoloff stresses the ongoing challenge of predicting which species might migrate to the Arctic due to climate change.

Koehler intends to gather a sample of the Iqaluit bladderwort for further analysis at the Museum of Nature, aiming to enhance scientific understanding of the plant’s northward expansion.
