An 11-year-old fossil enthusiast named Anderson Taylor has turned his passion for fossils into a unique venture by opening his own museum in Cambridge, Illinois. Taylor, who began collecting fossils at a young age, decided to showcase his extensive collection by establishing the Cambridge Natural History Museum.
Despite his age, Taylor proudly manages the museum and even holds a Guinness World Record as the youngest male museum curator, achieved at the age of nine years and 340 days. His interest in paleontology sparked at the tender age of three when he found a crinoid fossil in his yard, igniting a lifelong fascination with dinosaurs and fossils.
Over the years, Taylor accumulated a diverse collection of fossils, some acquired during family trips, others received as gifts, and some discovered with friends at his school playground. As his collection grew, Taylor’s family supported his endeavor to open a museum, leading to a successful partnership with the town that provided him with a rent-free building initially.
Today, Taylor’s museum has become a popular attraction in Cambridge, drawing visitors from near and far. The museum houses an array of artifacts, including Native American items, gemstones, minerals, fossils, taxidermy animals, and insects. Taylor’s goal is not only to display his collection but also to educate the community about ancient life and dinosaurs.
Taylor actively engages with visitors by giving tours, sharing paleontology facts, and conducting presentations for school groups. Looking ahead, he plans to expand the museum to accommodate his growing collection, with ideas such as adding an apartment upstairs or moving to a larger space to make room for a potential full dinosaur skeleton.
Despite the museum’s success, Taylor continues to dream big, aiming to further enhance his collection and educational outreach efforts in the future.
