“Winnipeg Sea Bears Secure CEBL Title with Dramatic Win”

Date:

An eruption of cheers filled Canada Life Centre on Saturday night when Simon Hildebrandt from Winnipeg made a game-winning three-pointer, securing the Winnipeg Sea Bears their inaugural Canadian Elite Basketball League championship. The victory was celebrated with confetti showering down and the iconic anthem “We Are the Champions” blaring through the speakers, marking their 98-84 triumph.

Reflecting on his unexpected winning shot, Hildebrandt described the moment as surreal, with his mind going blank before the jubilant celebrations began. This victory marked Winnipeg’s fourth CEBL season, with a significant parallel drawn to the late Chad Posthumus, another Winnipeg native who scored the game-winner in the team’s debut match in 2023.

Hildebrandt expressed his reverence for Posthumus and the significance of following in his footsteps by clinching the championship victory. Head coach Mike Raimbault shared a touching moment with Posthumus’s parents during the postgame festivities, acknowledging the emotional connection to the late player.

Guard Xavier Moon’s standout performance, scoring 29 points and earning the finals MVP title, added to the Sea Bears’ historic win. Despite facing setbacks with key players missing from the lineup, including Teddy Allen due to an assault incident and departures of Emmanuel Akot and Jeremiah Tilmon Jr. for overseas opportunities, the team persevered through the playoffs.

Originally set for a best-of-three series against the Brampton Honey Badgers, the championship game was condensed to a single showdown due to court safety concerns. Moon, who had previously secured a CEBL title with the Edmonton Stingers, emphasized the significance of winning in a city where playoff success was unprecedented.

In addition to the championship triumph, the Sea Bears set a new attendance record with 12,519 fans flocking to Canada Life Centre, surpassing the previous league record. Owner David Asper expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community and emphasized the validation of the team’s hard work.

Hildebrandt highlighted the importance of inspiring young basketball players in Winnipeg, showcasing that with dedication and perseverance, achieving success on a national stage is possible. The Sea Bears’ championship win served as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes in the Manitoba capital, symbolizing the realization of dreams on a grand scale.
