Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has generously contributed $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library after learning that five branches were at risk of permanent closure. Reid expressed her belief in using her success for positive impact, stating that supporting the community is essential.
To prevent the imminent closure of the five branches until the end of September, the library utilized $80,000 from its reserve funds. Seeking additional funding to sustain branches in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton, the library board had requested $351,000 from municipalities. Despite some contributions, a shortfall of over $200,000 remained.
The CEO of the library, Julia Merritt, acknowledged the significance of Reid’s donation, ensuring the branches’ operational continuity until the 2026-27 fiscal year. The funds are primarily allocated for staffing costs, as highlighted by Merritt in a press release.
Reid emphasized the importance of properly funding libraries, emphasizing her personal connection to libraries as a crucial factor in her journey to becoming a successful author. She recalled spending time at the Bedford library during her childhood, where she found inspiration for her career.
