Dolly Parton’s journey from humble beginnings to stardom has not only inspired her music but also led to the creation of a theme park, a podcast, and now a musical heading to Broadway later this year. Titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the production aims to narrate Dolly’s life story in her own words and through the songs that have shaped her experiences.
In a video announcement, the 80-year-old Parton assured viewers that the musical would authentically portray her life. She emphasized that the narrative delves into her true roots, struggles, losses, loves, and personal discoveries rather than focusing solely on superficial glamour.
The Broadway show will feature a blend of new songs penned specifically for the musical and some of Parton’s iconic hits like “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.” Scheduled to kick off performances on December 7 in New York City, the show is slated to run until November 21, 2027.
Expressing her excitement, Parton, whose illustrious career spans nearly seven decades, described the opportunity as a long-awaited dream. With over 3,000 songs to her credit and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, she holds prestigious positions in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Last summer, “Dolly” the musical premiered in Nashville at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, where it enjoyed a sold-out six-week run. Director Bartlett Sher expressed his awe at the profound connection audiences share with Dolly, underscoring her ability to inspire and bring joy to people’s lives.
The production promises an unfiltered portrayal of Parton’s life story, aiming to showcase facets beyond the glitz and glamour associated with her persona. Tickets for the show will become available to the public starting Friday, July 10.
