Tennessee plans to change the name of Nashville International Airport to honor the late country music legend, Dolly Parton, following her recent passing at the age of 80. The decision comes after a social media campaign by fans advocating for the airport’s renaming to pay tribute to Parton. Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee engaged with Parton’s team regarding this initiative, emphasizing Parton’s significant impact on the state’s culture.
“Dolly Parton’s remarkable life is deeply ingrained in our state’s history,” stated Governor Lee. “It is only fitting that Nashville International Airport, where Tennessee extends its hospitality to the world, should bear the name of our beloved state icon, welcoming travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.”
The proposal to rename the airport will be discussed during a meeting on September 17, addressing the current naming policy of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, which traditionally requires a two-year period after a person’s passing before naming any property in their honor. The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development fully supports this renaming effort.
Mark Ezell, the commissioner of the department, emphasized Parton’s role as a key figure in Tennessee tourism, describing her as the state’s foremost ambassador. He highlighted how Parton’s influence has introduced millions of travelers to the state’s music, landscapes, and warm hospitality, making the airport renaming a fitting tribute to the legendary artist.
Dolly Parton, born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, spent her early years in a modest cabin in Locust Ridge. Her musical journey began at the age of 13 when she started performing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. With iconic songs like “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You,” Parton became one of the top-selling female artists of all time, having sold over 100 million records and winning 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award.
