Survivors of a harrowing plane emergency landing in Prince George, B.C., where one person lost their life and multiple others sustained injuries, are recounting their experiences. Jaime Pawliuk, who was driving to work, described the moment the aircraft came crashing towards him, causing significant damage to his vehicle. Despite superficial cuts on his hands and glass in his hair, Pawliuk managed to escape the incident.
The emergency landing involving a Beech King Air 200 aircraft occurred on Foothills Boulevard, a major road connecting residential neighborhoods in Prince George. Pawliuk and others had to abandon their vehicles at the scene during the ongoing investigation. Subsequently, damaged vehicles were removed by flatbed trucks on Friday afternoon.
Another witness, Mohit Arora, observed a pickup truck being struck by the plane’s wing but fortunately, the driver survived. Images showed debris from the aircraft lodged in the truck’s windshield and a propeller lying in the road. A family member confirmed that occupants of a yellow car involved in the incident escaped uninjured but with damage to their vehicle.
The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) revealed that the plane, departing from Sturdee Airstrip, experienced engine failure, leading to the emergency landing on Foothills Boulevard. The TSB investigation indicated that the aircraft collided with four vehicles during the landing. The plane, registered to Sekani Air Ltd., a local charter flight company, was occupied by six passengers and two crew members, all of whom escaped unharmed.
Former TSB investigator Bill Yearwood emphasized the challenging decisions pilots face during emergencies, highlighting the risks involved in such situations. Despite the road reopening, the recovery process is expected to be prolonged. Pawliuk, still shaken by the incident, expressed gratitude for surviving and extended condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
