“Canada and U.S. Trade War Escalates with Tariff Battles”

Date:

Canada’s trade relations with the U.S. have become increasingly uncertain due to a rise in tariffs. President Donald Trump’s threats have created a sense of unpredictability in the North American free trade environment, causing economic concerns domestically.

In response to various trade issues, including provincial restrictions on U.S. alcohol and Canada’s restricted dairy market, Trump has implemented a 50 percent tariff on a wide array of Canadian products. Canada decided to walk away from negotiations last minute, with Prime Minister Mark Carney stating that they could not accept the terms offered by the U.S. as they felt the U.S. demands were excessive and the offerings inadequate.

As a countermeasure, Canada has now imposed retaliatory tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 percent on certain goods.
