“Sinkhole at Nicolas Cage’s Malibu Mansion Triggers Gas Leak and Evacuations”

Date:

A massive sinkhole emerged in front of a luxurious coastal mansion in Malibu reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage, causing the driveway to collapse. The incident triggered a gas leak around 6 a.m., leading to prompt responses from authorities and utility services. SoCalGas managed to control the leak after a few hours but decided to temporarily halt natural gas services in a section of the street to prevent further risks of coastal erosion.

Measuring approximately 7.5 to nine meters deep and 18 meters wide, the sinkhole extended into the roadway, prompting local officials to declare a state of emergency and issue evacuation orders for 31 properties in the vicinity. Despite attempts to reach out for comments, representatives for Cage remained unresponsive. Property records indicate that the mansion was sold in 2024, with the previous owner confirming Cage as the new buyer at the time.

The mansion suffered damages during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area following the remnants of Hurricane Marie, which transitioned into a tropical storm. Though the storm did not make landfall, it brought heavy rains and dangerous waves along the Southern California coast during the holiday weekend.

The City of Malibu released a statement on Wednesday acknowledging the sinkhole incident as part of broader regional coastal challenges, including monitoring coastal erosion in various vulnerable areas. The exclusive neighborhood sits between the ocean and the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, with Cage, 62, currently working on the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and set to portray John Madden in an upcoming biographical film about the NFL figure. Cage, known for his extensive acting career spanning over 100 films, earned an Oscar for his role in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
