Canada showcased a dominant performance against New Zealand, emerging victorious with a score of 86-71 in the semifinals of the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament held in Guadalajara. Throughout the game, Canada maintained the lead for almost 32 minutes, securing a significant 30-point advantage in the third quarter. Leading the charge for Canada were Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb, each contributing 17 points, while Jasmine Bascoe added 15 points along with eight assists and four rebounds. Swords displayed exceptional efficiency, shooting 6-for-8 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc.
In the upcoming final scheduled for Sunday in Guadalajara, Canada will square off against host Mexico, with the tournament title at stake along with a coveted spot in the next phase of Olympic qualification. Mexico secured their spot in the final by defeating Brazil in the other semifinal match. Canada previously clashed with Mexico in the group stage, triumphing with a 70-64 victory, setting the stage for an exciting rematch in the championship game.
The ultimate victor of the tournament will secure a berth in one of the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments slated for February 2028.
