In a solemn Calgary courtroom on Monday, a prosecutor revealed disturbing text messages exchanged between two men who conspired to lure, detain, and sexually assault women for profit. Steven Zwick, one of the men, detailed plans to incapacitate his ex-girlfriend, Chelsea Davidenas, to facilitate their heinous scheme.
During the failed abduction, Davidenas fought fiercely for her life and tragically succumbed to her assailants. Zwick, initially charged with first-degree murder, later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a life sentence with a minimum of 15 years before parole eligibility.
Another individual, identified as PR, also faces charges in connection with the case, although his involvement is yet to be proven. The court proceedings, based on an agreed statement of facts presented by the prosecution and defense, shed light on the chilling events leading to Davidenas’ untimely death.
The two culprits, Zwick and PR, orchestrated their nefarious scheme through exchanged text messages as they targeted vulnerable women for their abhorrent acts. Initially focusing on a different individual, their attention shifted to Davidenas, whom they planned to assault and film for potential monetary gain.
Following a harrowing struggle in PR’s residence, where Davidenas valiantly resisted her attackers, Zwick ultimately took her life. The men callously left her body in the room as they contemplated further crimes, including another intended victim, Ashley. However, their sinister plans were thwarted when Ashley managed to escape their clutches and seek help.
Subsequent investigations and a police undercover operation led to Zwick’s arrest and eventual confession. The despicable nature of the crimes was underscored by Justice Glen Poelman, who handed down a life sentence to Zwick, condemning the callous disregard for human life exhibited by the perpetrators.
