“AI’s Growing Influence: Navigating Online Safety Challenges”

Date:

AI’s influence on our daily lives continues to grow, presenting challenges for parents trying to keep up with the rapidly changing landscape. Families are increasingly tasked with guiding their children through a digital world saturated with AI, from social media to school assignments and even social interactions, as emphasized during the recent Safer Internet Day.

Navigating online safety amidst the abundance of misinformation can be daunting. In 2026, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile – a key sponsor of Safer Internet Day, we are encouraging families to engage in open dialogues through The Family Chat initiative to address smartphone usage and promote discussions about online safety within the home.

Renowned author and podcaster, Giovanna Fletcher, who is a mother to three boys, ages seven, nine, and 11, alongside her husband Tom, will be facilitating conversations with parents and children to address the challenges they encounter. The initial discussion will concentrate on AI and the valuable support Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub offers to parents with children up to the age of 18.

For families like the Karleys – consisting of Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua (13), Isaac (14), and Ruby (17) – technology is indispensable for staying connected. However, Anna and Emmanuel acknowledge their limited understanding of AI, which poses a safety concern.

Identifying AI-generated content can be tricky, as Anna admits, “I struggle to discern AI. There have been instances where I’ve mistaken AI for real content, only for the kids to correct me.” Even for the Karley family, distinguishing between real and fake content is a challenge, particularly on platforms like TikTok.

With most schoolwork now shifting online, often with AI-generated research, the Karleys and Giovanna are grappling with this shift. Giovanna notes, “I’ve observed that my eldest’s homework is predominantly computer-based. As parents, our focus should not be on condemning AI’s use in education but rather on evaluating its appropriateness continually.”

Here are some tips to help guide children in utilizing AI safely:
1. Explore AI collaboratively.
2. Encourage fact-checking as AI can make mistakes.
3. Respect age restrictions and review privacy settings.
4. Teach children to distinguish between real and fake content.
5. Encourage creativity alongside AI use.

Anna and Emmanuel appreciate having a reliable source of guidance. Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub offers straightforward resources and toolkits to facilitate discussions about AI with children, including tailored advice on safe AI use developed in collaboration with the UK Safer Internet Centre.

The Karley family finds the Online Safety Hub beneficial in enhancing their discussions on online safety. Emmanuel remarks, “It has enabled us to explore and learn together, enhancing our support for our children.”
