Amazon has conducted test flights with drones in preparation for its upcoming airborne delivery service in the UK. The company confirmed that a limited number of flights had been initiated from its base at Symmetry Park in Darlington, County Durham. However, the official launch of the drone delivery service for customers is yet to happen.
Last January, Amazon announced Darlington as its designated test center in the UK. In this pilot program, eligible customers in the town will have the opportunity to receive packages weighing under five pounds (2.3kg) within a two-hour timeframe.
The latest drone model, the MK30, boasts advanced technology that enables it to navigate around obstacles and prioritize the safety of individuals, pets, and property.
David Carbon, vice president of Prime Air, emphasized that the drones are designed for quiet and efficient operation, with safety being a paramount concern.
An Amazon spokesperson disclosed that Prime Air drone flights have commenced from the Darlington fulfillment center, but actual deliveries are not yet taking place. The service is anticipated to be officially launched in 2026, representing a significant advancement in drone delivery for the UK.
Amazon highlighted that the drones are equipped with technology to avoid obstacles like clotheslines and trampolines, which may not be visible on satellite maps. The drones are also equipped with cameras that continuously monitor the airspace during flight to detect and avoid potential collisions with other aircraft.
The perception technology utilized by the drones includes sophisticated machine learning models trained to identify various objects, including humans, animals, physical barriers, and other drones or airborne vehicles.
