A 27-year-old American nurse, Sarah Danh, fell critically ill with acute liver failure while on her honeymoon in Japan. She needed a medevac flight to return home to San Antonio, Texas, where she is currently in a coma. Recently, her uncle shared positive updates on Facebook, stating that Sarah has been showing signs of improvement.
Khang Le, Danh’s uncle, mentioned that although she is still on a ventilator, she has started to breathe weakly on her own. There are also indications of responsiveness as she faintly nodded when her mother spoke to her.
Danh, a labour and delivery nurse at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital, got married to Luke Gradl after seven years together. Their dream wedding took place in Houston’s Spring Branch before they headed to Tokyo for their honeymoon in April. Unfortunately, Danh fell ill shortly after their arrival in Japan, experiencing symptoms like jaundice, vomiting, fever, body aches, and hepatic encephalopathy.
The unexpected health crisis shocked Gradl, who mentioned that there were no prior signs of illness during their wedding. Danh’s family initiated a GoFundMe campaign while she was hospitalized in Japan, which surpassed its $50,000 goal, raising over $187,000. The overwhelming support from donors was a source of immense gratitude for the family.
Upon her return to the U.S., Danh’s MRI revealed that she had suffered a stroke and bilateral brain damage. However, subsequent scans indicated that some of the brain damage might be reversible, bringing renewed hope to her family and loved ones.
Khang expressed that the news of potential improvement has lifted their spirits, with signs suggesting that Sarah may be slowly emerging from the coma.
