Andy Burnham Gains Momentum as Potential UK Prime Minister

Date:

Andy Burnham is set to promise economic growth and uphold Labour’s budget regulations as he aims to reinforce his financial expertise in the wake of Sir Keir Starmer’s departure, positioning him as a likely successor to No 10.

The former mayor of Greater Manchester is anticipated to address fiscal policy next week, a move reported by The Times, after his return to Parliament as an MP following victory in the Makerfield by-election.

Discussions are reportedly underway about a potential reshuffling of the Cabinet, with Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood being considered as potential replacements for Rachel Reeves as chancellor. However, Burnham’s supporters have clarified that no appointments have been made or agreements reached as of Monday night.

The path to the top position for Burnham appeared clearer on Monday as his main rival, former health secretary Wes Streeting, endorsed him to succeed Sir Keir. Yet, Darren Jones is contemplating entering the race, which could complicate matters for Burnham, amid reports of encouragement from Starmer loyalists.

Sources close to the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister indicated that he is currently hesitant to join the race but would seek assurances on economic policies, addressing concerns about potential market instability.

If Burnham manages to secure the necessary support to stand as the sole candidate, he could potentially become prime minister as early as mid-July. In a heartfelt speech outside No 10, the Prime Minister acknowledged the loss of support from his MPs and pledged a smooth transition of power to his successor.

Expressing confidence in his legacy, he assured full support to the incoming leader, recognizing the advancements made during his tenure. Sir Keir announced plans to expedite the selection of a new leader by the time Parliament resumes after the summer recess on September 1, with nominations closing on July 16.

Prospective candidates have until the deadline to garner backing from at least 81 Labour MPs. Notably, on Monday evening, Sir Keir and his wife thanked No 10 staff for their support during a gathering in the garden.

Burnham commended Sir Keir’s contributions to the country and emphasized that the transition signifies a new chapter for the Labour movement, focusing on progress and renewal for the party and the nation.
