During a visit to Dover, Mr. Burnham highlighted a significant decrease in crossings, with the current year’s arrivals being 43% lower than the previous year. The total number of arrivals stands at 14,526 this year, compared to 25,436 during the same period last year.
While acknowledging the progress made, the PM stressed the ongoing need for relentless action, as echoed by the public’s concerns he encountered during his visits. He emphasized the importance of establishing secure routes to undermine the criminal networks’ appeal, emphasizing the essential role of increased enforcement efforts.
The issue of small boat crossings has been leveraged by both Reform and the Conservative Party, with Nigel Farage frequently stoking fears of a migrant “invasion.” Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp’s involvement in addressing small boat crossings took a comedic turn when he accused a French warship of intimidating him by firing “live rounds” during an interview in the Channel.
When asked about changing the tone of the debate, Mr. Burnham emphasized the necessity of addressing the issue directly without engaging in political maneuvering. He underscored the importance of restoring control over borders while providing necessary support to those in genuine need.
Tragically, at least 13 individuals have lost their lives attempting to cross the Channel this year, with four fatalities occurring in a single day last week. Mr. Burnham visited the joint command room in Dover, where various agencies monitor Channel movements using surveillance drones.
Meanwhile, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood visited the NCA headquarters in Stratford, noting a significant increase in the number of officers tackling organized immigration crime. Ms. Mahmood expressed optimism about the progress made in addressing small boat crossings but emphasized the need to address the root causes prompting individuals to undertake such perilous journeys.
Efforts to discourage migrants from making the journey to the UK have been implemented, including a controversial proposal to introduce temporary refugee status. The most recent data shows that 326 individuals arrived on Saturday via four boats, bringing the total crossings since Mr. Burnham assumed office to 2,057.
Wednesday marked the busiest day for small boat crossings this year, with 752 migrants arriving in the UK. The fluctuation in numbers is attributed to weather changes, with peak crossings typically occurring during the summer months, according to the Home Office.
