An individual described as “angry” allegedly fatally stabbed their partner before causing a gas explosion at their residence in east London, according to court proceedings.
Clifton George, aged 45, is facing charges for the death of Annabel Rook, 46, following a dispute at their dwelling on Dumont Road in Stoke Newington on June 17, 2025.
Although George has admitted culpability for Rook’s demise by pleading guilty to manslaughter, he contests the accusation of murdering Ms. Rook, as disclosed to jurors at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
During the trial’s commencement, prosecutor William Emlyn Jones KC highlighted that the stabbing occurred amid the couple’s deteriorating relationship, subsequent to Rook instructing George to vacate their shared abode. Allegations suggest that George then devised a plan to end his life and cause an explosion within the house.
Reportedly, he retrieved a knife from the kitchen to fatally stab Rook in the living room, exhibiting considerable anger and distress thereafter.
Following the stabbing, George purportedly initiated a fire in the household, igniting a gas canister, which led to a substantial explosion causing significant structural damage and alerting neighbors.
The prosecutor detailed that on the night of June 16 and 17 the previous year, a confrontation ensued between the defendant and Annabel Rook, escalating to physical violence resulting in her tragic demise.
Ms. Rook, daughter of retired Old Bailey judge Peter Rook, co-founded a London-based social enterprise called MamaSuze, dedicated to empowering refugee and migrant women through artistic and dramatic initiatives.
Emlyn Jones further mentioned that when discovered after the explosion, Rook had sustained multiple stab wounds, while George was found in the backyard attempting self-harm with a shard of broken glass.
In subsequent police interviews, George confessed to losing control upon discovering Rook had allegedly deceived him.
Emlyn Jones emphasized to the jury that George acknowledged the act of fatally stabbing his partner, thereby conceding to the killing, even though the manslaughter plea has not been validated, and the murder charge persists.
The trial will involve an examination into the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing, including an evaluation of the couple’s tumultuous relationship, characterized by challenges leading up to the tragic incident.
The prosecutor underscored that evidence pertaining to the couple’s relationship dynamics in the final years of Rook’s life will be presented through testimony from family and friends, in addition to communications retrieved from their phones documenting the relationship’s decline.
George maintains his denial of the murder charge while admitting to manslaughter. The legal proceedings are ongoing.
