The head of Russia’s sole registered anti-war party has affirmed his commitment to advocating for change within the country, despite facing escalating pressure from authorities resulting in the party’s disqualification from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court’s recent ruling to exclude the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko, meaning “apple” in Russian, from the September vote was seen by party leader Nikolai Rybakov as a response to the resonance of their message to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine with the public.
Rybakov emphasized that the overwhelming support from the populace, evident in the vocal protests outside the court following the verdict, holds greater significance than the court’s decision. Once a prominent voice in parliament and a government critic, Yabloko now holds only a few regional seats and lacks representation in the State Duma, where the Putin-backed United Russia party dominates.
While United Russia is expected to maintain its stronghold in the upcoming elections, Rybakov expressed confidence that Yabloko would present a formidable challenge if permitted to participate. Yabloko is currently challenging the Supreme Court’s ruling, which alleged undisclosed campaign support from Western sources among other accusations that the party refutes.
Rybakov, a 47-year-old opposition figure, affirmed his commitment to remaining in Russia despite stringent censorship laws and legislation that has forced many dissenting voices to flee or face prosecution. He stressed the importance of effecting change from within the country, stating that public sentiment against the war is growing, as indicated by decreasing support for the armed forces’ actions in Ukraine.
Yabloko’s advocacy for peace and a thriving democratic Russia has resonated with a growing number of supporters, underscoring a widespread desire within Russian society to end the conflict. Despite efforts to suppress the party, Rybakov remains resolute, noting the unyielding solidarity of millions who share Yabloko’s vision for a peaceful future. Social media has also played a role in amplifying support for Yabloko, with videos featuring individuals symbolically holding apples or engaging in activities aligned with the party’s message.
