Large areas in western Europe are experiencing intense heat once more, with both Britain and France facing their fifth heatwaves of the summer. The soaring temperatures are on track to potentially set new records. Forecasters in the U.K. are anticipating temperatures to climb up to 38 C in central and southeast England, possibly marking the hottest day of the year, surpassing the previous peak of 38 C recorded on June 26 in eastern England.
The U.K.’s Met Office indicated that if August maintains average conditions, last year’s record for the hottest year could be surpassed. In France, temperatures are expected to be even higher, with central and southern regions reaching 40 C and Paris expecting 38 C.
Reports from Britain highlighted the challenges faced by hospital workers, particularly nurses, who have been struggling with heat exhaustion, with some even collapsing due to the extreme temperatures. The Royal College of Nursing expressed concerns about the lack of adequate measures to address the impact of the heat on healthcare professionals.
Both Britain and France are witnessing a scarcity of air conditioning outside commercial spaces, exacerbating the discomfort caused by the heatwave. The prolonged hot weather has led to widespread drought conditions in these countries, affecting agriculture, water resources, and the environment.
In response to the water shortage crisis, Southern Water in England has applied for a drought order to restrict non-essential water usage, including activities like car washing and filling non-domestic swimming pools. The lack of rainfall has raised concerns about water supplies in certain regions.
With the persistent dry conditions, authorities in Britain and France are on high alert for wildfires. In England, firefighters have been battling wildfires in various areas, with the number of incidents reaching a concerning level. While not as severe as in other European countries, the wildfires serve as a reminder of the need for better preparedness.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is contemplating a ban on disposable barbecues to mitigate the risk of wildfires amid the ongoing heatwave. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness about responsible actions during this period of extreme heat.
French firefighters are also facing increased challenges, with demands for additional resources to cope with the escalating weather conditions. Recent fires in different regions of France have underscored the urgency of enhancing firefighting capabilities to combat the growing threat of wildfires.
