A young apprentice welder shared his harrowing experience after being engulfed in flames at a steel yard in Wigan, describing his desperate plea to nurses to end his life. Dwayne Bell, then 17, suffered severe burns while carrying out a routine task that turned into a nightmare as a massive fireball engulfed him, leaving him with third-degree burns on his face, chin, and hands.
Recalling the incident that occurred in March 2021, Dwayne emphasized the lack of supervision and training that led to the accident, stressing the importance of caution on work sites. Despite sustaining burns to eight percent of his body and enduring excruciating pain, he survived the ordeal after being airlifted to the hospital and placed in an induced coma for a week.
Having undergone multiple skin grafts and facing ongoing challenges due to his injuries, including restrictions on physical activities like football and golf, Dwayne highlighted the lasting impact of the incident on his daily life. He sought legal assistance and reached a settlement with the involved parties, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures for apprentices in hazardous work environments.
Determined to move forward and raise awareness about workplace safety, Dwayne has returned to welding with a different company but continues to face physical limitations due to his injuries. By sharing his story, he hopes to prevent others from experiencing similar traumatic incidents and strives to lead as normal a life as possible despite the lingering effects of the accident.
