Date:

Police in South Wales have provided an update following an incident where a man, reportedly armed with a crossbow, was shot by officers due to alleged threatening behavior. The individual was discovered with the weapon after authorities responded to a call at a residence on St Edward Street late on Friday, July 10, according to Gwent Police.

The 21-year-old suspect was wounded by police using an official firearm and subsequently received medical assistance before being transported to a hospital. As of the latest update, he remains in stable condition. A referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been made in response to the shooting.

The man, hailing from Newport, has been arrested on suspicion of affray, threats to kill, and possession of an offensive weapon. At present, he is in police custody at the hospital pending further investigations.

Deputy chief constable Nicholas McLain sought to allay public concerns, emphasizing that the incident was isolated with no ongoing risk to the wider community. McLain highlighted the rarity of firearm-related incidents in Gwent and assured that such matters are treated seriously and with appropriate measures.

McLain praised the professionalism and high standards of the firearms officers involved, stressing that the use of police firearms is a last resort in situations of significant threat. He commended the officers for their challenging role in making quick decisions under pressure.

Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, to contact the police quoting log reference 2600220612. Alternatively, individuals can reach out to Crimestoppers anonymously with any details.
