During his inaugural visit to the Isle of Man as the reigning monarch, King Charles displayed his impressive language abilities, engaging in the ancient Manx language at the island’s parliament, Tynwald. Amidst the crowd, he conversed in French with a native speaker.
Acknowledging the significance of the Manx Language Year, Charles, also known as Lord of Mann, humorously expressed his hope of not unintentionally undermining the celebration of the language.
In a formal greeting to the self-governing crown dependency, Charles commended Tynwald, one of the world’s oldest continuous legislatures, for its enduring partnership with the Crown. Reflecting on the historical ties, he mentioned his great great great grandfather’s initial royal visit to the island in 1847.
Following the formalities, King Charles interacted with the public outside the parliament building, conversing with well-wishers in various languages. He later explored the iconic Douglas Promenade, visiting the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway to commemorate its 150th anniversary.
As the Isle of Man’s Head of State and Lord of Mann, the monarch has a longstanding connection with the island, notably marked by past royal visits. His most recent visit, together with Queen Camilla, was in 2012 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.
