Armed police entered a shopping center in Derby and apprehended three teenagers after receiving reports of a group potentially carrying a firearm. The incident unfolded when CCTV operators at Derbion shopping center alerted police about a young man, dressed in black with a balaclava, who appeared to be carrying a small handgun. Witnesses observed the firearm being passed among several young men who concealed it in their waistbands.
Concerned members of the public also notified security about the visible weapon. Before armed police arrived, unarmed officers and Derbion security successfully detained the teenagers. Subsequent investigation revealed that the weapon was actually an imitation firearm, leading to the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of possessing the imitation firearm.
Derbyshire Police confirmed that despite the item being a toy, the CCTV operators took swift and appropriate action in response to the public and security team’s concerns. Superintendent Richard Lambert commended the quick response of the CCTV operator and security personnel, emphasizing the importance of public safety and the cooperation that led to the successful apprehension of the teenagers.
