Eight children tragically lost their lives in Louisiana, and their identities have been disclosed. A 31-year-old army veteran named Shamar Elkins allegedly carried out the devastating shootings at three locations in Shreveport early in the morning, as reported by authorities.
The Shreveport Police Department revealed that the extensive crime scene spanned three areas in the Cedar Grove neighborhood, where Elkins engaged in a carjacking before being pursued by law enforcement and ultimately shot dead by officers.
The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office released the names of the seven child siblings and their cousin who were victims of the horrific incident. The children, aged between 3 and 11, were identified by their mothers, with the group comprising three boys and five girls.
The victims were identified as Jayla Elkins (3), Shayla Elkins (5), Kayla Pugh (6), Layla Pugh (7), Markaydon Pugh (10), Sariahh Snow (11), Khedarrion Snow (6), and Braylon Snow (5). Autopsies have been scheduled for the deceased children.
Corporal Chris Bordelon confirmed that seven children were found deceased inside one of the residences, while one child was discovered deceased on the roof, likely attempting to escape. The motive behind the violent act remains unclear, with authorities leaning towards labeling it as a domestic incident.
Two women sustained critical injuries and were receiving medical care, according to officials. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and US House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed their sorrow over the tragedy and commended the swift action of law enforcement in response to the incident.
The devastating incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the US since January 2024, when eight individuals were killed in a Chicago suburb. The investigation is ongoing to uncover further details surrounding the tragic event.
