“Artemis II Astronauts Navigate Historic Moon Journey”

Date:

Living in a spaceship involves freeze-dried food, a compact toilet without privacy, and tight living quarters. Four astronauts are embarking on a historic journey to the moon after 53 years, defying gravity with the Artemis II mission. Their goal is a lunar flyby, traveling over 252,000 miles away in the Orion Capsule.

Nasa reported that the crew has surpassed the halfway mark between Earth and the moon, over 136,080 miles away from Earth. The crew, including Commander Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, the first person of color beyond low Earth orbit, Christina Koch, the first woman on a lunar mission, and Canadian Jeremy Hansen, launched into space on April 1.

During their two-week mission, the astronauts will face challenges in their small living space resembling a minivan. Life inside the Orion Spacecraft, named “Integrity,” combines advanced technology with the coziness of camping. The crew can gaze at Earth shrinking and the moon growing through the six windows of the capsule.

Despite lacking a fridge or cooker, the crew has a food warmer and water dispenser. They enjoy meals like mac and cheese and prawn cocktail from freeze-dried pouches. The compact high-tech vacuum toilet system faced an initial malfunction but was fixed promptly.

To combat the effects of zero gravity on their bodies, the crew exercises daily using a flywheel device. Despite being far away, they maintain communication with Mission Control in Houston. However, they will experience a communication blackout behind the moon due to potential radiation exposure from solar flares.

The mission is risky, but the crew is prepared, with the Artemis 2 mission scheduled to conclude on April 10, 2026, splashing down into the Pacific Ocean. The crew will parachute out of the spacecraft, facing a seven-minute radio blackout before rescue by a US Navy ship.
