An individual who played a significant role in the establishment of Asos has passed away after a fatal incident at an apartment building, with an ongoing inquiry into the matter.
The deceased, Quentin Griffiths, aged 58 and hailing from London, tragically fell from his 17th-floor residence in Pattaya, Thailand, on February 9. Notably, he was instrumental in the inception of Asos 26 years ago and later realized substantial financial gains through share sales in 2010.
Following reports of a body found near the apartment block, emergency services promptly responded to the scene, confirming the identity of the deceased as Mr. Griffiths.
The circumstances surrounding Mr. Griffiths’ demise indicate that he was alone at the time, with his room securely locked from the inside and no signs of forced entry. While initial examinations did not uncover any foul play, forensic tests are currently underway at the property.
The conclusive cause of Mr. Griffiths’ passing awaits a thorough post-mortem examination, a process anticipated to extend over several months.
Previously, Mr. Griffiths faced legal scrutiny last year after accusations of embezzling £500,000 from a business he co-owned with his ex-wife in Thailand. Although released pending investigations, Mr. Griffiths consistently maintained his innocence amidst the allegations. The couple shares a son and daughter from their previous marriage, as reported by The Sun.
A statement from a source close to Mr. Griffiths’ family expressed uncertainty and described the situation as a genuine mystery, with the term “suspicious circumstances” being cautiously approached.
Acknowledging the incident, a spokesperson from the Foreign Office affirmed their support for the deceased British national’s family and engagement with local authorities in Thailand.
Asos, co-founded by Nick Robertson, Andrew Regan, Deborah Thorpe, and Mr. Griffiths, has evolved into a global entity serving approximately 195 countries since its establishment in 2000. Noteworthy expansions include the acquisition of Topshop, Topman, and Miss Selfridge from Philip Green’s defunct Arcadia Group.
Initially, Asos commenced operations as a platform retailing celebrity-inspired outfits from television, film, and music media. This foundational concept inspired the company’s name, ASOS, representing “AsSeenOnScreen,” with the motto “Buy what you see on film and TV.”
