Lebanon and Israel have reached a 10-day ceasefire agreement, as announced by Donald Trump. Trump claimed to have resolved the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, stating that this marks the 10th war he has successfully addressed.
The temporary ceasefire is set to commence at 5 pm EST (10 pm BST) following discussions held by Trump with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump mentioned that both nations agreed to the truce after a meeting in Washington DC, which he noted was the first such encounter in 34 years, also involving US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Lebanon became entangled in the US-Israeli conflict with Iran on March 2 when Hezbollah, supported by Iran, launched rockets at a military site in Haifa, Israel. Subsequently, Israel responded with extensive airstrikes across Lebanon and initiated a ground incursion into the southern regions, resulting in the loss of numerous civilians and the destruction of villages.
According to Lebanon’s health ministry, Israeli forces have caused the deaths of over 2,100 individuals in Lebanon, including 172 children, and left more than 7,000 others injured since March 2. Additionally, around 1.2 million people, equivalent to one-fifth of Lebanon’s population, have been displaced due to the conflict.
In response, Hezbollah attacks have led to the deaths of two civilians in Israel, while 13 Israeli soldiers have lost their lives in Lebanon, as reported by Israeli authorities.
Trump, in his announcement of the ceasefire, revealed that he has tasked Rubio, Vice-President JD Vance, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine to collaborate with Israel and Lebanon toward achieving a lasting peace. He emphasized his previous involvements in resolving “nine wars across the world,” asserting that this 10th peace deal marks a significant milestone.
Trump and his administration have made claims, though disputed, about their involvement in settling conflicts in various regions. Notably, there are ongoing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Gaza Strip, despite assertions of resolution by Trump.
The situation in Gaza remains tense, with casualties reported even after a ceasefire came into effect on October 10, 2025. Additionally, India has refuted claims of Trump’s role in securing a ceasefire with Pakistan, while Serbia has clarified its lack of intentions to engage in a war with Kosovo.
As Trump continues to make diplomatic moves, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine persists, with mounting pressure on Trump to intervene for a resolution. However, no further US-mediated talks are currently scheduled amid the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East.
In a subsequent statement, Trump expressed intentions to host Aoun and Netanyahu at the White House for what he described as the “first meaningful talks” between Israel and Lebanon since 1983.
