“Assailant Attacks Pregnant Woman at Birmingham Restaurant”

Date:

Diners at a restaurant in Birmingham faced a terrifying ordeal when an assailant armed with a baseball bat and knife targeted them following an attack on a pregnant woman. The incident unfolded at Al-Qamar restaurant on Vincent Street in Balsall Heath as a pregnant woman sought refuge inside the establishment, seeking help from patrons like Akilah Bennett and her family who were preparing to leave.

Upon the woman’s arrival, a man brandishing a baseball bat appeared outside the restaurant. Initially, it was unclear if there was a prior connection between the attacker and the woman, but it soon became evident that the situation was unprovoked.

Describing the chaotic scene, Ms. Bennett recounted how her uncle courageously shielded the woman from the attacker who was menacingly wielding the bat. The restaurant owner identified the assailant as possibly being a local resident of Balsall Heath.

The pregnant woman explained that she had been assaulted by the man while walking home, sustaining a serious injury to her elbow. Despite the attacker’s focus on her, it seemed he was acting without recognizing his victim.

The situation escalated when the assailant was momentarily driven off by Ms. Bennett’s uncle and others, only to return with a knife. In response, the diners swiftly secured the restaurant, ensuring the safety of all present until the threat subsided.

Although the aggressor displayed hostility towards bystanders, he eventually departed. Prompt police and ambulance responses ensued, but the tense ordeal felt prolonged to those involved.

Reflecting on the incident, Ms. Bennett expressed disappointment at having to take shelter in the restaurant despite the pleasant dining experience and commendable staff response to the crisis. West Midlands Police confirmed the altercation occurred shortly before 10 pm on July 14 at Vincent Street, where officers responded to reports of a woman being assaulted, suffering a significant arm injury and subsequently being hospitalized.

Authorities are actively reviewing CCTV footage and engaging with witnesses to gather information about the incident. Individuals with relevant details, including footage, are urged to contact 101 and reference log 6300 dated July 14.
