A man narrowly escaped a significant prison sentence for his brutal attacks on a woman after a Magistrate requested him to promise to behave sincerely. Baiden Foley, an Australian man, admitted to six charges of extreme violence against his girlfriend of three months in Kalgoorlie Magistrate’s Court. In a series of violent incidents in April, the 18-year-old engaged in a disturbing spree of violence, repeatedly hitting his partner with his fists and a metal broom. When the broom broke, he even stabbed her in the face with it.
Following his guilty plea to six counts of aggravated violence, including charges like aggravated unlawful wounding and assault causing bodily harm, Foley was released back into the community on the condition that he would uphold good behavior. The court learned that Foley accused his girlfriend of infidelity on two occasions in April, leading to severe beatings. The first attack occurred on April 20 when Foley assaulted his girlfriend after waking up and accusing her of cheating. Police intervened to stop the violence, finding the woman hiding from Foley with visible injuries.
Despite being served with a restraining order, Foley returned four days later for another violent episode. Accusing his girlfriend of cheating again, he proceeded to beat her with a broken metal broom, inflicting a stab wound on her face using the broken edge. During this assault, he also threatened her with a serrated steak knife.
Magistrate Donna Webb expressed deep concern over Foley’s violent behavior, referring to it as “horrendous” and “deeply disturbing.” Despite the severity of his actions, Foley was spared a jail term and instead was placed on a 12-month community-based order and fined after promising to comply with the court’s directives. Webb highlighted the gravity of Foley’s domestic violence as a serious issue and emphasized the need for him to adhere to the court’s orders to avoid further harm.
