“Australian PM Albanese relocated amid security threat scare”

Date:

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was relocated from his official residence due to a reported security threat. The incident occurred at The Lodge in Canberra, prompting the evacuation and transfer of Mr. Albanese to a secure location. Emergency services were dispatched to the prime minister’s residence following the unfolding events on Tuesday evening local time.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed responding to an “alleged security incident” near Parliament House around 6pm AEDT (7am GMT). After conducting a thorough search, no suspicious items were found, and the AFP stated that there was no ongoing threat to the community or public safety. Mr. Albanese was able to return to his residence after the completion of the search, around 9pm.

Former AFP Detective Superintendent David Craig, who had previously protected prime ministers, emphasized the significance of evacuating Mr. Albanese, noting the seriousness of the situation. He highlighted the authorities’ proactive response, indicating the credibility of the threat that led to the evacuation.

This development follows AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett’s warning about the increasing targeting of politicians. She raised concerns about the rise in individual grievances, particularly online threats translating into real-world actions. The AFP disclosed receiving numerous threats against MPs across various government levels annually, reflecting the persistent challenges faced by political figures in Australia.
