The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen revealed that the Bald Range fire has damaged or destroyed about 150 structures, with 40 of these structures located within the boundaries of the District of Summerland. Summerland’s mayor confirmed the completion of damage assessments as more residents return post-evacuation. Currently, 22% of the 5,500 properties under evacuation orders in the south Okanagan have transitioned to evacuation alerts. The Regional District specified that evacuation alerts are active for properties east of Highway 97 and the Trout Creek neighborhood to the west.
Amid ongoing firefighting operations, the B.C. Wildfire Service is addressing lingering hot spots in Summerland, noting progress in containing the fire perimeter near residential areas. The fire service expects firefighting activities to shift northwestward, targeting fires encroaching into forested regions as challenging conditions persist.
As the situation unfolds, the BCWS cautions residents about the presence of smoke due to the wildfires, with light winds prevailing in central and southern British Columbia. Environment Canada has issued air quality warnings for large portions of the region, citing continued exposure to smoke over the next few days. Additionally, assistance from various provinces, including international firefighters from Australia and Mexico, has been mobilized to combat the escalating wildfire crisis in British Columbia.
