“Barclays to Close Barclaycard Website, Shift Focus to App”

Date:

Barclays has revealed its decision to shut down its Barclaycard website, advising customers to transition to using the mobile app instead. The closure of the website is scheduled for June 10, as Barclays notes a growing trend of customers opting for the app for their day-to-day banking needs.

The bank has assured that customers will eventually have access to online Barclaycard services through the Barclays website. With over five million customer accounts in the UK, this shift aims to accommodate the changing preferences of its user base.

In an email communication to customers, it was stated, “Your Barclaycard online servicing is closing on 10 June 2026. We understand that a change like this can be unexpected, but this won’t affect your account or how you use your card in any way. Please keep using the Barclaycard app to manage your account. We’re making this change because an increasing number of customers are choosing to bank through our app.”

While some customers have expressed frustration on social media about the closure, Barclays spokesperson mentioned that the company is streamlining services by integrating Barclaycard functions into Barclays’ online banking platform. This transition will be gradual and ensure uninterrupted online banking access for regular users.

Customers will still have the option to apply for new cards or manage existing accounts through the Barclaycard or Barclays apps, telephone banking, or in-branch services. Barclays’ decision to simplify services comes in light of recent reports indicating their plans to reopen physical branches and reinstate personalized banking services.

Vim Maru, the CEO of Barclays UK, emphasized the importance of maintaining a human touch in customer interactions, stating, “What we’re trying to do is something that allows us to differentiate in front of our customers. Of course, we’re going to be great in digital – but we’re going to be there for you when you need some help and support. You’re not going to be stuck in some chatbot trying to get out of the loop and trying to speak to someone.”

Barclays has closed over 800 branches since 2018, but with 206 branches still operational across the UK, the bank aims to strike a balance between digital convenience and personalized customer service. The move reflects a strategy to provide a blend of digital efficiency and personal assistance for a better customer experience.
