A contentious initiative to transform the birth home of Adolf Hitler into a police station has faced criticism from survivors of concentration camps. The £17 million renovation of the 17th-century house in Braunau am Inn, Austria, where Hitler was born in 1889, is close to completion. The conversion, scheduled for the second quarter of 2026, aims to repurpose the notorious address into a police facility to eliminate its negative historical connotations.
Despite government assertions that the project will diminish the site’s association with Nazism, detractors argue that turning it into a police station is inappropriate. Ludwig Laher, a writer and member of the Mauthausen Committee in Austria, advocates for a different approach, suggesting the establishment of a peace-promoting venue instead of a law enforcement facility.
Criticism mounts as Austria’s Interior Ministry confirms the renovation, initiated in 2023, is set to finish by the end of the first quarter. The delayed project, originally slated for completion earlier, aims to prevent the building from attracting neo-Nazi groups by housing a police presence on-site.
Government officials defend the decision, stating that having a police station at the location will unequivocally prohibit any glorification of National Socialism. However, history reveals that Austrian police forces were complicit in Nazi activities during Hitler’s regime, participating in enforcing anti-Jewish laws, aiding in arrests and deportations, and engaging in atrocities in occupied territories.
The involvement of Austrian police battalions in heinous acts during the Holocaust underscores the dark history associated with the country’s law enforcement. Approximately 65,000 Austrian Jews perished, and 130,000 were exiled during that period, with the police playing a pivotal role in the implementation of persecution.
