“Baroness Casey Calls for Overhaul of Social Care System”

Date:

Social care is described as a system in disarray, lacking consistency and transparency, and only functioning through temporary fixes, according to Baroness Louise Casey who is leading a review of the sector.

Baroness Casey is heading an independent investigation into social care, aiming to pave the way for a proposed “National Care Service” as outlined in the Labour Party’s manifesto.

During a significant address at the Nuffield Trust, Lady Casey emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation and provided an update on her commission’s progress, with forthcoming recommendations expected later this year.

She highlighted the lack of a comprehensive social care plan in the past, criticizing the absence of adequate funding to support the promises made. Lady Casey stressed the necessity for a defining moment akin to the establishment of the NHS or welfare system to set clear expectations, responsibilities, and financial provisions for social care.

She pointed out the burdensome process families face in arranging care for their relatives, underscoring Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s rejection of a system reliant on low wages and unstable employment contracts.

Previously, Lady Casey expressed to BBC Radio 4 her commitment to formulating a sustainable long-term strategy that aligns with the country’s needs over the next 25 years, emphasizing the importance of national consensus and support.
