A woman from Belgium, Reymy Amelinckx, accidentally ingested a 17cm-long spoon while eating yogurt when her dog unexpectedly jumped on her lap. Reymy had to make a quick decision between choking on the spoon or swallowing it, and she described feeling the utensil smoothly sliding down her throat into her stomach.
Reymy, a 28-year-old medical representative, was sitting on her couch enjoying yogurt when her energetic dog, Marley, leaped onto her, causing her to jerk her head back and accidentally swallow the spoon. Despite her initial attempts to remove the spoon with her hand, she found herself in a situation where she had to either swallow or risk choking. Upon her boyfriend’s return home, she chose not to disclose the incident out of embarrassment.
Realizing the severity of the situation after dinner, Reymy sought medical advice online and was advised to go to the emergency room immediately. Doctors confirmed that the spoon was too large to pass naturally, leading to the need for a gastroscopy procedure. The following night was challenging for Reymy as she felt discomfort and anxiety with the spoon lodged in her stomach.
After two days, the spoon was successfully removed under local anesthesia through a gastroscopy procedure, causing some minor complications like a sore throat and gastric bleeding. Despite the ordeal, Reymy recovered quickly and returned to work the next day, surprising her colleagues with the X-ray evidence of the incident.
Reymy shared her experience to caution others about the dangers of multitasking while eating and the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if in a similar situation. She decided to keep the spoon as a memento and joked about turning it into a unique piece of art with her boyfriend. Despite the bizarre incident, Reymy emphasized the importance of safety and seeking medical help promptly in such circumstances.
