“Beware of Travel-Related Illnesses: UKHSA Urges Precautions”

Date:

Britons are being advised to take precautions while traveling abroad following the disclosure of over 1,000 cases of travel-related illnesses reported this year. Among the illnesses documented are malaria, dengue fever, and Zika virus.

To avoid falling ill, individuals are encouraged to consider preventive measures such as vaccination, taking malaria prophylaxis, and maintaining good personal hygiene. The most recent data shared by UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) through Travel Health Pro highlights the importance of these precautions.

From January to June 2026 in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland (EWNI), a variety of travel-associated infections were recorded. Zika virus, predominantly transmitted by mosquitoes in regions like South and Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia, saw eight reported cases, with Indonesia being the most frequently cited country of exposure.

Chikungunya, another mosquito-borne disease characterized by sudden fever and joint pain, accounted for 59 cases, with Sri Lanka as the most commonly visited country by infected travelers. Malaria, a severe mosquito-transmitted infection, resulted in 557 reported cases in EWNI between January and May 2026.

Enteric fever, including typhoid and paratyphoid fever, was responsible for 287 cases, predominantly occurring between May and October in recent years. Dengue fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, saw 137 cases reported in England, with Southeast Asia and South Asia being the primary regions of exposure, particularly Thailand and the Maldives.

Dr. Hilary Kirkbride, a consultant epidemiologist and head of travel health at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of proactive planning before travel to prevent illnesses from affecting holiday plans. Recommendations include checking the TravelHealthPro website for destination-specific health advice, receiving necessary vaccinations, taking antimalarial medication, and safeguarding against mosquito-borne diseases by using insect repellent and protective clothing.

It is also advised to maintain proper food and water hygiene to prevent infections like enteric fever. Special considerations are recommended for pregnant individuals or those planning conception, who should consult with healthcare professionals or travel clinics before embarking on trips.
