Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a concerning new scam that is on the rise. The telecommunications company has issued an alert after noting a significant increase in fake call center numbers being distributed through artificial intelligence (AI).
According to Virgin Media O2, millions of individuals may have already fallen victim to calling these fake numbers, connecting them with cybercriminals who aim to steal personal information, such as banking details.
Reports indicate that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered fake customer service numbers via search engines or AI tools, highlighting the extent of the issue.
Virgin Media explained that criminals are leveraging AI-powered tools to present unsuspecting consumers with counterfeit phone numbers, websites, and search results, enabling them to gather data and commit fraudulent activities.
With the reliance on AI-generated search results growing, hackers are finding it easier to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive information.
To combat this threat, Virgin Media advises its customers to only use authentic service numbers provided on official company websites, applications, or billing statements. For contacting O2, customers should dial 202 from an O2 device, while Virgin Media can be reached at 150 from a landline.
It is crucial to exercise caution when encountering numbers from search engines, social media posts, or AI tools and to refrain from sharing security codes or personal information with unsolicited callers, regardless of their claims.
Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the risks associated with fraudulent activities facilitated by AI tools. The company is actively taking steps to protect customers by blocking known scam numbers and flagging suspicious calls using AI technology. Mackenzie encouraged the public to report suspicious numbers to 7726 to help combat scams more effectively in the future.
