“Big Walk” Emerges as Friendslop Game of the Year

Date:

The latest craze in the gaming industry is a phenomenon known as “friendslop,” despite its seemingly negative connotation. Games like “Peak,” “RV There Yet?” and “Meccha Chameleon” have gained immense popularity due to their easy-to-understand gameplay, affordable pricing, and the chaotic fun of multiplayer interactions.

Patrick Thornley from Langley, B.C., who regularly plays friendslop games with friends across Canada, describes the essence of these games as cooperative play with friends, often involving completing mundane tasks while embracing the humorous incompetence of the players. The primary goal is to enjoy the gameplay experience without taking it too seriously.

A newly released game, “Big Walk,” follows the friendslop trend but stands out by combining emergent chaos with a meticulously designed world reminiscent of classics like “Myst” and “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.” It has become a strong contender for game of the year by focusing on the dynamics of friendship and mutual exploration within a video game setting.

The term “friendslop” was coined by an X user in 2025, primarily referencing the game “Lethal Company.” The concept of “friendfarming” is also associated with this genre, representing the act of either expanding one’s circle of friends or spending quality time with existing friends. Friendslop games typically have modest budgets, simple visuals, and straightforward gameplay mechanics, setting them apart from high-budget, graphically intense titles like “Call of Duty.”

These games often feature proximity chat, where players’ voices grow fainter as they move farther apart, encouraging close communication or the use of in-game devices for long-distance interactions. The appeal of friendslop games lies in the freedom to goof around with friends without significant consequences, unlike traditional games where serious gameplay is the norm.

While success is not guaranteed, friendslop games have seen viral success stories in recent years. For instance, “Peak” by Aggro Crab has sold over 10 million copies since its launch in June 2025, showcasing the genre’s growing popularity. Similarly, “Meccha Chameleon” by a two-person team achieved remarkable sales within its initial days, highlighting the market demand for light-hearted, collaborative gaming experiences.

“Big Walk,” developed by Melbourne studio House House, offers a unique twist to the friendslop genre with its cartoonish characters and collaborative puzzle-solving gameplay set in an Australian outback-inspired environment. Players cooperate to solve puzzles and progress through the game by collecting red, gourd-like objects. Unlike procedurally generated friendslop games, “Big Walk” features a meticulously crafted landscape with intricately designed puzzles that require teamwork and communication to solve.

Players must develop their own communication strategies, utilizing gestures and environmental objects like walkie-talkies and flare guns to navigate the challenges presented in the game. The focus of “Big Walk” is on fostering teamwork and shared experiences among players, encouraging detours and spontaneous interactions within the game world.

Although the game’s novelty may diminish after around 20 hours of gameplay due to its fixed world design, the collaborative and immersive nature of “Big Walk” promises an exceptional gaming experience that celebrates friendship and exploration. Available on various platforms including Windows PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch 2, and Sony PlayStation 5, “Big Walk” stands out as a top contender for the best gaming experience of the year.
